Tropical Storm Dexter

Tropical Storm Dexter formed recently in the western Atlantic Ocean, becoming the fourth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.

  • Location: As of August 4th, it was located northwest of Bermuda or about 255 miles (410 kilometers) northwest of Bermuda.

  • Movement: It's currently tracking eastward or east-northeastward, moving away from the U.S. coast.

  • Intensity: Dexter is a minimal tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (72 kph). Some slight strengthening is possible in the short term, but strong wind shear and dry air are expected to limit this.

  • Forecast: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) expects Dexter to become post-tropical by Wednesday.

  • Threat to land: Dexter poses no threat to the U.S. coast or Bermuda. However, there is a moderate risk of life-threatening rip currents and high surf along the Delaware and New Jersey coasts through Tuesday, August 5th.

In addition to Dexter, the NHC is monitoring two other areas for potential tropical development in the Atlantic:

  • One is located a few hundred miles off the southeastern U.S. coast, with a 30% chance of development within the next seven days.

  • The other is a tropical wave moving off the west coast of Africa, with a 50% chance of developing into a tropical depression late this week as it moves west-northwestward across the central tropical Atlantic.
