Early life and education
Malik studied at Meerut University (now Chaudhary Charan Singh University). He began his political career as a student leader and was influenced by the socialist ideology of Ram Manohar Lohia.
Political career
Malik's career spanned over five decades and saw him associated with various political parties.
Early State Politics: He was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1974.
National Politics: He represented Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1989 and again from 1986. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from 1989 to 1991. He also briefly served as Union Minister of State in 1990.
Joining the BJP: He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2004 and was appointed National Vice-President in 2012.

Bihar: From October 2017 to August 2018.
Odisha: Additional charge from March to May 2018.
Jammu and Kashmir: Served from August 2018 to October 2019, during the revocation of Article 370.
Goa: Served from November 2019 to August 2020.
Meghalaya: Served from August 2020 to October 2022.

Malik was known for his candid statements and dissenting views. He advocated for farmers' rights and spoke out against the farm laws. He also raised corruption allegations related to the Kiru Hydroelectric Project.
