New UPI rules effective August 1, 2025

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) implemented a new set of rules for UPI transactions, which took effect from August 1, 2025. These rules are aimed at improving system performance, enhancing security, and promoting the responsible usage of UPI.

Here's a summary of the key changes:

• Balance Enquiry Limit: Users can now check their account balance through UPI apps a maximum of 50 times per app per day. Background balance checks by apps are no longer permitted, and UPI apps will display the available balance after every successful transaction.

• Autopay Restrictions: Scheduled payments will now be processed only during non-peak hours, with restrictions on the number of retries.

• Faster Transaction Status Updates: UPI apps must display the final transaction status quickly, and users have a limit on how often they can check pending transactions.

• Recipient Name Display: The recipient's name will be displayed before payment confirmation to help prevent incorrect transfers.

• Linked Account View Limit: Users can view linked bank accounts a maximum of 25 times per day per app.

• Inactive UPI ID Deactivation: UPI IDs linked to inactive mobile numbers will be automatically disabled.

• Enhanced Bank Account Verification: New bank accounts added to UPI will undergo stricter verification.

• Faster API Response Times: UPI APIs for core functions must now respond within 10 seconds.

• UPI Through Credit Lines: From August 31, 2025, users can make UPI payments and withdrawals using pre-approved credit lines with specified daily limits.
